Blackwater diving is a unique style of diving in which divers are dropped in deep water (usually between 400-600ft to the bottom) but are only in the upper 40ft of the water column where all of the deep water planktonic critters come up to feed at night.

This species of fish is known as a pearlfish, the adults are known to live inside sea cucumbers where they hide during the day, at night emerging to come out and feed, eventually returning to the sea cucumber before day-break. Pearlfish larvae can be distinguished by the presence of a long filament in front of their dorsal fins.
