Pictured is a Flamingo Tongue Snail making its way along a purple sea fan. Flamingo tongue snail are a marine species of gastropod mollusk that presents very distinct beautiful markings on its shell making them very easy to recognize. Most often I find these snails at the bases of sea fans and other gorgonian varieties of coral. That being because these snails, although one of the prettiest species to find on a reef has a more sinister purpose for being found there. Flamingo tongue snail are an ectoparasite that lives and feeds on the polyps of coral. Flamingo tongue snail also posses toxic chemicals present in corals to produce toxic substances that are deposited and stored in the mantle of their shell.
